1) Are your barrels made entirely of carbon fiber?
Not entirely. At the heart of each barrel is a stainless steel “barrel blank” that has been contoured to our specifications prior to being wrapped in carbon fiber. Areas to be threaded, such as the breech, muzzle and gas block journal (where applicable) remain steel.
2) How much do they weigh?
Generally speaking, our bolt-action barrels will weigh 3 to 3 ½ pounds. AR barrels will weigh between 1 ½ to 2 ½ pounds depending on length and journal size.
3) How strong is the carbon fiber?
Our carbon fiber barrels are 10 times stronger than steel by weight and nearly impervious to weather, nicks, dings or scratches.
4) Can I send you my barrel for contour and wrapping?
No. All of our PROOF Research carbon fiber-wrapped barrels are brand new blanks that we contour to our specifications and wrap right here in Columbia Falls, MT.
5) Do you make barrels for both bolt-actions and ARs?
We do. Carbon fiber-wrapped barrels are available for ARs in most common lengths, twists and gas system lengths with journal sizes of .750 and .875 (and soon .936). For a complete list of AR barrel specs click here. Bolt-action barrels are available in most common calibers, twists and lengths.
6) What contours do you make?
We have three basic contours for bolt-action barrels—Sendero, Sendero Light and a Sendero for .338 calibers and larger. The standard Sendero is available with a shank diameter of 1.200” (or 1.250” for .338 and larger) and measures .900 at the muzzle on a 28” barrel. The Sendero Light measures .800” at the muzzle on a 26” barrel. For complete specs on barrel contours click here. We also make a bull barrel which measures 1.200″ down the length of the barrel.
7) How do I know what twist to order?
Most bullet manufacturers (i.e. Berger) have informative websites regarding the best twist rates for specific bullets, however, please feel free to inquire of our sales staff. We’re happy to offer advice to assure you’re getting a twist rate that’s appropriate for the bullets you intend to shoot.
8) How will my barrel arrive?
Your bolt-action barrel will arrive ready for thread and chamber by your gunsmith. Your AR barrel will arrive threaded and chambered. Matched bolts are available as an option for AR-10® variants.
9) How long does it take to get one?
Barrels with common twists and lengths may be ready for immediate shipping. Special orders may take longer. Please inquire as to current delivery times. We also have two online distributors (Evolved Ballistics and Stockey’s) that carry a selection of barrels for immediate delivery.
10) How do I order and how much do I have to put down?
